Nötsch im Gailtal

Whether it is hiking, cycling, swimming in the nearby swimming lakes, rafting, gliding, riding, angling, skiing or simply relaxing, in Nötsch im Gailtal, at the foot of the Dobratsch, there are many varied options for spending your leisure time.

Art and culture are highly valued in Nötsch. The Nötsch Circle Museum in particular is known well beyond the borders. This is devoted to the four artists Sebastian Isepp, Franz Wiegele, Anton Kolig and Anton Mahringer, who played a major role in determining the direction taken by Austrian art at the beginning of the 20th century. The museum is housed in the building in which Franz Wiegele was born, and shows regularly changing exhibitions.

Part of the folk culture is the Gail Valley traditional costume, every example of which is a work of art in itself made of many pieces; it is shown off amongst other things at the traditional Kufenstechen. The pleated skirt and exaggerated underskirt, for which up to 12 metres of fabric are used, are especially pretty.

Culinary tip: Every year on the first Saturday in October the Polenta Festival is celebrated in Nötsch. The “Polentawirte” hosts present around 50 different polenta dishes.
