Region Wörthersee
Nestled between the Alps to the north and the Adriatic to the south, near the border with Slovenia and Italy, and between the towns of Klagenfurt and Villach, is one of the best-known summer holiday destinations in Austria, the Wörthersee region.
This region is a paradise for water sports lovers and sun worshippers, the party and lifestyle scene, a yoga hotspot and meeting place for bikers, hikers and runners, with Europe’s highest wooden viewing tower and traces of the Neolithic period.
At up to 28 degrees, Lake Wörthersee is a playground for everyone who is devoted to water, whether on water skis, a wakeboard or an SUP board, in a sailing dinghy or motorboat. As well as water sports in summer, in the last few years all sorts of facilities for exercise and opportunities of slowing down have developed away from the water too, in the nature region around the lake.
In late summer and autumn in particular, nature takes over. Golden rays of sunlight meet the yellows and reds of the vegetation, which contrast with the turquoise of the lake. For many people this time in particular is the most beautiful period of the year for an active holiday on Lake Wörthersee, with hiking, cycling and sightseeing tours in the region.
The four-lake valley, with lakes Rauschelesee, Keutschacher See, Hafnersee and Baßgeigensee, is not just ideal for summer fun with swimming, cycling and walking, but also ideal for taking a trip into the past: in Lake Keutschacher See there are prehistoric pile dwellings from the Neolithic period. The most striking point in the municipality of Keutschach is the Pyramidenkogel viewing tower. The highest wooden viewing tower in the world at almost 100 metres offers a fabulous 360-degree view over Carinthia’s mountain and lake landscape.
Around 500 kilometres of marked running and hiking trails, the circular hiking trail, and the Wörthersee passenger boats, to name just a few, make Lake Wörthersee a place where you can live your own lifestyle to the full.
