Tangy clear mountain air, swimming lakes with water pure enough to drink, and in between extensive hiking paths and bike trails – the Villach region in the heart of Carinthia is a natural paradise for active holidaymakers at any time of year.
The turquoise Lake Faaker See with the idyllic island in the middle looks almost like paradise. Active holidaymakers can look forward to all sorts of activities not only on and in the water, but all around the lake too. Tips: a kayak tour through the reed belt, the Kopein Trail mountain bike trail, the Kanzianiberg rock climbing centre, hiking on the Alpe Adria Trail (Stage 22) and a visit to the European Bike Week.
From the shore of Lake Ossiacher See, the largest of the nine swimming lakes in the region, the Kanzelbahn gondola lift leads up to the Gerlitzen, a family adventure mountain with a high rope course, a cart track and the best thermals for paragliders. From May onwards the lake offers an enticingly refreshing swim – or a circular cycle tour past the ruined Landskron Castle and the former Benedictine monastery of Ossiach Abbey.
Up on the alpine pasture you can enjoy the view of the Alpine-Adriatic mountain world, while down below the warm water in the lakes at up to 28 degrees sparkles in the sun. Nature and sport, culture and enjoyment: the region around the Dreiländereck, where Austria meets Italy and Slovenia, makes every single day of your holiday something special.
The heart of the region beats in Villach, the town on the River Drau, with its picturesque pedestrian zones and cafés. Here you can really feel the Carinthian people’s zest for life, and the focus is on celebrating, especially around Carnival time and the famous Kirchtag fair. The KärntenTherme in Villach-Warmbad is one of the most modern spa experience worlds in Austria, and is open all year round.
