Winter camping and caravaning in the south of Austria doesn’t leave skiers cold: with the home away from home on wheels to cross-country trails and ski slopes.
For years Carinthia has been proving itself as a true paradise for campers with 19 winter campsites, some of which have received multiple awards. Cross-country trails, winter walking paths, ski slopes and often also frozen lakes for ice skating are right on your doorstep; and sauna, massage and wellness areas are part of the service.
A campsite is a little world of its own – particularly in winter. The houses perch on wheels in the snow and children build igloos and snowmen. Behind brightly lit windows there’s a cosy home. Here the holidaymakers have a piece of home with them. Everything is at hand: tea is steaming hot on the cooker, a candle is burning and the fridge is well filled. Nobody has to trip over wet boots or damp ski wear: after the fun in the snow they are put in the campsite’s large drying room. The meals are only a few steps away – an inn is a matter of course at each campsite.
And even after an eventful day on the piste or a winter walk, that’s not all on the campsites: skittle alleys, saunas, solarium, massages, play rooms and trips offered for the whole family provide for a change and relaxation in front of your own door. Be it a group winter walk, entertainment in a mountain chalet or a toboggan ride – the campers in Carinthia are a close-knit community that is also open to “newcomers”. You will certainly not get cold feet during winter camping. This is not only ensured by the campsites that are equipped with every imaginable comfort, but also by the operators of the campsites themselves who are happy to take time for a glass of mulled wine or a chat. Hospitality is not a matter of the season in Carinthia.
Whether in Döbriach at Lake Millstatt, 12 km from the ski resort of Bad Kleinkirchheim with its two thermal fun spas, at the foot of the Katschberg, in Hermagor and in the Lesach Valley in the Nassfeld-Hermagor ski region, at Lake Ossiach with views of the Gerlitzen ski area or in the region of Lake Klopein and Southern Carinthia with the Petzen ski mountain: winter holidaymakers at campsites everywhere in Carinthia will have areas equipped in a modern style with free ski buses to the ski resorts at their disposal. If you do not want to travel with your own caravan or mobile home, you can also settle in rented mobile homes.
